Mountain View School District’s Commitment to Ensure the Safety and Well-being of our Community

In light of ongoing reports of immigration enforcement activities in California and nationwide, many families may be experiencing uncertainty and fear. As a District that deeply values diversity and the strength that comes from our shared experiences, we firmly believe that our differences are what make our community unique, resilient, and beautiful. During these challenging times, we want to reassure all students, families, and staff that we are united in our support for one another.

To ensure the safety and well-being of our community, the District leadership team has reviewed current laws and best-practice guidance related to immigration enforcement. Our Board Policy BP 5145.13, Response to Immigration Enforcement, affirms that all students have the right to attend school regardless of immigration status and that the District does not collect or share immigration-related information or grant access to nonpublic areas unless required by law. The policy also protects student and staff privacy, prohibits discrimination, and outlines clear procedures for responding to any enforcement requests.

Mountain View School District is also in compliance with newer California laws adopted, such as SB 98 , AB 49, AB 419, and AB 495, which include requirements such as:

  • Immigration enforcement officers presenting a valid warrant to access nonpublic school areas
  • Schools prominently posting and sharing the State’s Immigration Enforcement Actions at California Schools Guide for Students and Families
  • Families receiving annual notifications outlining their educational rights

Updated caregiver affidavit procedures and staff training have also been implemented to support families.

These efforts align with California law, including the Safe Schools for Immigrant Students Act, which protects student privacy, limits immigration enforcement access to campuses, and ensures students are free from discrimination based on immigration status.

District efforts also align with California State Law, AB 699 - the Safe Schools for Immigrant Students Act, which:

  • Prohibits the collection of immigration status information.
  • Requires policies to prevent immigration enforcement on school campuses.
  • Forbids discrimination based on immigration status.

As a District, we remain unwavering in our commitment to creating a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment for every member of our community. Together, we will face these challenges with compassion, strength, and unity, ensuring that our schools remain places of growth, learning, and support.

LACOE's Immigrant Relations program supports school districts, students and parents with timely information and responds to school needs around immigration policies.

LACOE facilitates the navigation of services for immigrant communities in Los Angeles County by creating meaningful connections between nonprofit agencies and schools, promotes compliance with policies that protect students and their families (AB 699, FERPA, AB 2121, and others) and can provide technical assistance to schools that need help in the implementation of those policies.
