Parkview Celebrates America With Drive Thru Parade

Parkview School is known for its annual Americanism Parade, a beloved community tradition for the past 45 years.  This year, due to the pandemic, the Parkview Eagles had to find another way to show their patriotism and keep the school’s traditional Americanism Parade alive.  They did just that by hosting a Drive-Thru Americanism Parade where Parkview students and families decorated their cars, scooters and bicycles, driving, riding or walking through the front parking area of the school while teachers and staff members waved and cheered.

“For safety we were not able to have our traditional parade, and with the pandemic we’ve had to change or eliminate many activities our students love and we did not want to lose one more thing,” said Donelle Soto, Parkview principal.  “So, we figured out a way to continue our Americanism tradition while still being COVID safe and it was a wonderful way to keep our Parkview Eagles’ spirits up and connect with our community.”

With patriotic music playing from the speakers, car after car, decorated with posters, balloons, and children excitedly waving small American flags out of the windows and sun roofs, the drive-thru parade succeeded in showcasing Parkview’s patriotic pride.

“The turnout for the drive thru event was great,” said Connie Gonzalez, 2nd grade teacher.  “Our families did a terrific job decorating their cars and bikes and it was wonderful to see our students.  This parade means so much to our Parkview community and I’m happy we were able to find a way to still have it.”

Students also received free books and prizes as they drove through celebrating America.  Staff members and students were very happy to see each other, even at a distance.

“We had great participation for the parade and it was wonderful watching our students show their patriotism and have fun.  All of us here at Parkview love this parade and although our 46th annual parade looked a little different, we are grateful for the opportunity to create life-long memories for our students and families,” said Soto.  “Hopefully next year we will be able to return to our traditional parade format with marching bands, hundreds of spectators and our wonderful students marching down Elliott Street,” she added.
