School Counselors Create Virtual Calming Room

School Counselors Create Virtual Calming Room

Mountain View School District’s team of School Counselors is dedicated to supporting the academic and social/emotional needs of all students, especially during these uncertain times of the COVID-19 pandemic. To help support students and families while school campuses are physically closed, the counselors created a Virtual Calming Room which is accessible on the District website www.mtviewschools.com and all school websites.
The counselors recognize that the drastic changes to our lives as a result of the pandemic can be overwhelming and many people are feeling a wide range of emotions including scared, confused, lonely, numb, angry, grateful or calm. They wanted to create a place for students, staff and others in the MVSD family to find tools and strategies for managing emotions and feelings in positive ways, the result was the Virtual Calming Room. The counseling team collaborated to prepare information and links to resources and activities such as mindfulness, puzzles and games, sounds, virtual field trips, read-alouds, movement, coloring, community resources, healthy habits and more that allow visitors to the Calming Room to focus on emotional well-being.
“Our team of school counselors is dedicated to assisting students and families with navigating through the uncharted waters we are in due to the pandemic,” said George Schonborn, MVSD’s Director of Pupil Personnel Services. “They have done a tremendous job finding creative ways to stay connected with students during distance learning and providing an online platform through the Virtual Calming Room will benefit our entire Mt. View family.”
