MVSD's 2 Instructional Programs for 2020-2021

MVSD's 2 Instructional Programs for 2020-2021

The Mountain View School District is offering two Instructional Program options for the 2020-2021 school year, enabling families to choose what they are most comfortable with for their children for the upcoming school year.

Utilizing the work of the District’s Beginning of School Task Force Committee, as well as parent survey responses, the District developed two instructional program models including a Three Phase-Return to Campus Instructional Model and an All Online Virtual Academy.

With the pandemic rapidly evolving, and with a focus on ensuring the health and safety of students and staff, MVSD decided on a phased model and was planning to start the school year on August 17 with Distance Learning prior to Governor Newsom’s announcement in mid-July that all schools in counties on the state monitoring list will be reopening with Distance Learning only.

“While we have all wondered what the state of education would look like this fall, for the past few months our MVSD team has worked diligently to prepare the best educational options for our students while keeping the safety of our students and staff as our top priority,” said Lillian Maldonado French, Superintendent.    “Throughout the coming school year, our goal is to ensure our communities are healthy and connected, and that all students are receiving high-quality instruction that meets their needs,” she added.

The District’s Three-Phase Return to Campus Instructional Model begins with Distance Learning in Phase 1, then transitions to Hybrid Models in Phases 2 and 3 when Los Angeles County reaches State metrics.

In Phase 1 students begin the school year with Distance Learning from home.  Teachers will lead standard-based daily Distance Learning lessons, with rigorous follow-up activities to be completed virtually.  Services will be provided to special populations and access to technical support for families will be available at schools. Pending the situation with the COVID-19 cases and guidance from Public Health, the District will remain in Phase I until LA County has met the requisites to safely return students to campus.  Phase 2 includes a Hybrid Instructional Model with the possibility of students returning to campus for In-Person classes 2 or 3 days per week and Remote/Distance Learning at home 2 or 3 days per week.  Schools will follow all health and safety protocols to ensure the safety of students and staff.  Pending the situation with the COVID-19 cases and guidance from Public Health, the District plans for Phase 2 to continue until it is deemed feasible to add more students on campus.  Families wishing to continue Distance Learning only can choose to participate in the Virtual Academy.  For Phase 3, MVSD schools have enough space and are equipped to house all students on each campus while maintaining social distancing protocols. When it is deemed safe to do so, the District will gradually welcome all families wishing to come back to the schools, for 2-3 days a week for in-person instruction and 2-3 days of supervised virtual follow-up activities on campus.

The All Online Virtual Academy provides an alternative to the traditional school program.  The educational program is delivered through a virtual setting and includes daily live interaction with teachers and rigorous follow-up activities. It is a separate program which will function as a separate school and students can remain in the academy for the full school year.

According to Laura Gaber, President of the Mountain View Teachers Association (MVTA), most MVTA members feel that continuing to teach remotely is very important in getting the Coronavirus under control.

“As the number of positive COVID-19 cases continue to be alarming in number in LA County, especially in El Monte, we are very grateful that teaching and learning will continue to be virtual this fall.  Safety for students and staff is of great concern,” said Gaber.  “I appreciate that the District, our classified union and teachers union are dedicated to educating and supporting our students and their families, as well as our own staff, in this unprecedented time.”

MVSD’s Board of Education approved the Instructional Plan and Reopening Schools for 2020-2021 Resolution at a Special Board Meeting on July 23, 2020.

“The pandemic has forced all schools and districts to implement a new way of providing instruction and services for students,” said Jacqueline Saldana, Board of Education President.  “Our administrators, teachers, classified and support staff have worked tirelessly to provide services for our families and plan for the school year.  The Board is grateful to everyone for bringing their expertise and thoughts together to meet the academic and social-emotional needs of our students, families and community.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for everyone.

“The resilience and perseverance of our Mountain View team, our students and our families has been remarkable,” said Maldonado French.  “While there is nothing more that we want then to open our schools and welcome our students and staff back, until it is safe to do so we remain committed to do all we can to provide meaningful learning and ensure health and safety for our entire Mountain View community. We look forward to starting our 2020-2021 school year, a year unlike any other, and providing our students with a new way of schooling that includes academic learning and social emotional support while continuing our mission of inspiring every student to succeed every day.”
