To celebrate the completion of 50 days of school, the Baker Elementary School Chargers held a 50’s themed Grease Lightning Day with staff and students decked out in 1950’s attire.  The campus was full of poodle skirts, pony tails, leather jackets and bobby-socks as everyone sock-hopped and hand-jived to revel in all they’ve accomplished since the start of the school year.

As a special recess time treat, fruit smoothies topped with whipped cream and a cherry were served by the Nutrition Services team, and fun 50’s music played in the quad as students celebrated all they’ve learned in school over the past 50 days.

“Our Grease Lightning event commemorates the collaborative effort of our students, teachers, support staff and families in promoting academic progress and diversity over the past 50 days,” said Leticia McCorkle, principal of Baker School.  “It’s great to see so many of our Chargers dressed up.”

Among the many areas of focus in classrooms over the first 50 days of school were spelling, writing, math, reading, science, history, character building and social emotional learning.

“In second grade we’ve worked on spelling, writing simple paragraphs, story problems, math, and writing a compare and contrast paper on Halloween and Dia De Los Muertos,” said Elena Brown, teacher.

Fourth graders waiting for their smoothies were excited to share that they’ve learned many new math strategies and are mastering multiplication, division and multi-step word problems.  Along with learning about California history, they are also developing their writing skills as they learn expository, descriptive, persuasive, and narrative writing.

“We’ve had a very busy and productive 50 days and our students have worked hard and accomplished a lot,” said McCorkle.   “I’m very proud of our students and our entire Baker community and I’m looking forward to more successes and achievements as we move through the school year.”
