Mountain View School District’s engaging and enriching Superhero Summer Program is underway, serving students in preschool through 8th grade.  The four-week summer offerings are engaging MVSD’s superhero students in hands-on lessons in Math, Science and Social Emotional Learning as they participate in Summer School, the Migrant Education Summer Program, Extended School Year (ESY) Program, Summer GATE program, New to Kindergarten classes, and Preschool programs.  Free breakfast and lunch are provided by the District’s Nutrition Services Department and Think Together is providing extended educational and fun enrichment and field trips in the afternoons.

“Our Superhero Summer Program brings together learning and fun, using hands-on activities with a variety of materials and manipulatives in the areas of math and science focusing on mathematical practices and collaborative learning,” said Eva Robles, Coordinator of Community Schools and Extended Learning.  “We are excited to offer our summer programs and the comprehensive learning will serve our students well.”

Teachers are utilizing vocabulary strategies, sentence frames, question stems, interactive note-taking, and developmental read-aloud activities in both the hands-on science and math lessons.  As a component of the social-emotional learning, school counselors are using Thrival Kits, which are shoebox sized kits that students fill with small, meaningful items as they complete classroom challenges and activities focused on positive mental health and well-being.  At the end of the four-week summer program, student will have built their own mental wellness toolkit to take home.

Packed with learning and enrichment, students are enjoying the Superhero Summer Program and in addition to the academic focus, they appreciate the opportunity to take part in spirit and dress up days, fun Friday activities including a foam party, picnic, beach day, game truck and carnival day, field trips to the Discovery Cube, bowling and the movies, and more.
