Mountain View School District students and parents enjoyed a day of literacy and learning at the  17th Annual Family Learning Conference hosted by the University of La Verne’s LaFetra College of Education. Themed, “SLOW LIFE: A More Mindful Way of Living”, the day of family fun included hands-on activities, interaction with authors, exploring books, learning reading strategies, enjoying entertainment and raffles.  MVSD provided transportation via school bus to the event.

Three of MVSD’s Teachers On Special Assignment (TOSA) led interactive workshops at the event.  Ramona Chandler conducted a workshop for students in 4th through 8th grade on the water cycle and the importance water has in our environment.  Alicia Raygoza engaged Kindergarten through 2nd grade students in a workshop creating seed bombs where students created their own mini-meadows and learned about biodiversity and the importance of pollinators.  Lillie Ruvalcaba presented a workshop on upcycling for Transitional Kindergarten through 3rd grade students, teaching them the importance of reusing and recycling plastic bottles to reduce trash and what goes into landfills.  Students learned how create their own mini garden in a plastic soda bottle.

Every child in attendance received a bag full of age appropriate books to take home.  Families had a great time and appreciated the opportunity to learn together at the university.

“Thank you for hosting and presenting this wonderful opportunity and event to our community and children of Mountain View,” said Yahaira Hernandez Borrasca.  “My daughter and I had a blast enjoying all the activities and important presentations hosted by the staff including meeting several of the college students.  On our bus ride back to school, all the children were enjoying their reading or coloring their books together. The parents were just thrilled to attend a great event!”
