Twin Lakes Students Celebrate Unity Day

Students and staff members at Twin Lakes School were decked out in the color orange during their distance learning on October 21 to celebrate Unity Day, sponsored by Pacer’s National Bullying Prevention Center (NBPC)Themed “Together against bullying. UNITED for kindness, acceptance and inclusion” Unity Day encourages everyone to come together in a powerful message that bullying should never be part of childhood.

October is also Bullying Prevention Month and throughout the month Twin Lakes has been empowering students with information and action plans to prevent bullying. School Counselor, Martha Chirinos has been going into the Zoom classrooms to teach students about Digital Citizenship and Cyberbullying, providing internet safety tips, and plans for engaging positively and safely online.  Teachers presented lessons reinforcing bullying prevention and ways to create a respectful and kind learning environment.

“Even though we aren’t together on campus, it was important for our school to celebrate Unity Day,” said Chirinos.  “We encouraged everyone to wear orange on October 21 and provided focused lessons on kindness, acceptance and the prevention of cyberbullying,” she added.

Chirinos has also created a Lunch Bunch twice a week for students, offering a space for them to socialize in a safe platform, as well as an opportunity to express themselves and have fun by playing virtual games she facilitates.

The Twin Lakes Comets are together against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion and want every child to feel safe from bullying while at school, online or in the community.
