Sixth graders in Lumina Lagos-Alex’s class at Maxson School explored organic farming during their field trip to Old Grove Farm in Redlands.   Touring the 65-acre farm, they learned about the many fruits and vegetables that are grown there.  Old Grove Farm is owned by the Knight family and the produce grown there is only sold to school districts through the Farm to School program.

The students were able to pick and eat oranges in the citrus groves and picked and tasted swiss chard while walking in the vast fields.  The field trip also included a hayride through the immense farm, feeding and petting goats, learning about the working dogs on the farm, and a walk along the stream learning about the wildlife.

The fun and educational field trip was made possible by a Literacy for Life Grant awarded to Lagos-Alex by the California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom.

“This was a great field trip and my students loved it,” said Lagos-Alex.  “Old Grove Farm is a wonderful family owned and operated farm and we were fortunate to have Farmer Bob and his daughter Anna as our tour guides.”

Farmer Bob Knight, owner of Old Grove Farm is a fourth-generation farmer and his mission is to make Southern California small farms sustainable by connecting local growers to family, school, and college eaters through community supported agriculture and Farm to School. The Knight family is committed to providing the community with the best fruits and vegetables they can grow, taking care of the land as true land stewards, focusing on organic and regenerative practices, and connecting kids with the wonders of nature.
