MVSD Students Tour Rio Hondo College

MVSD Students Tour Rio Hondo College

Reinforcing Mountain View School District’s college-bound culture, several school counselors took 45 students on an all-day college field trip to Rio Hondo College.  The kindergarten through 8th grade students were excited to tour the campus and were impressed with how big and vast Rio Hondo is.  Throughout the day students visited classrooms and learned about Rio Hondo’s many strong career-technical programs such as nursing, fire and police academies, automotive and alternative fuels, and basic skills courses and services.

Students were able to interact with nursing instructors and student nurses and even learned how to check vital signs and treat minor injuries.  They also got to explore car engines in the automotive shop and learned about ceramics as they watched the instructor spin the pottery wheel and create a ceramic art piece.

“We appreciate the efforts of our counselors for providing this wonderful opportunity for our students,” said Lillian Maldonado French, MVSD's Superintendent.  “College is definitely in the future for our students and field trips like this to explore different colleges and universities are a great way for them to see the many options available to them.”

MVSD offers a variety of college field trips throughout the school year and during the summer months for students and families.  Inspiring students to be future collegiate scholars is part of the District’s college-bound culture which is promoted among all students and families through college visitations, the El Monte Promise Foundation’s Scholars Savings Program, the AVID program, the Partnership Scholars Program, College and Career Day Events, and the GEAR UP program.
