On October 28th, schools in the Mountain View School District joined more than 8,000 communities, and one million people nationwide to celebrate Lights On Afterschool, an annual event calling attention to the importance of afterschool programs for youth, families, and communities.  A project of the Afterschool Alliance, the Lights On Afterschool Celebration shines a spotlight on the afterschool programs that keep young people safe, engaged in fun, hands-on learning, and offer their families peace of mind in the hours when school is out of session.

According to Yvonne Paul, General Manager of Think Together’s Santa Fe Springs region, they are proud to partner with MVSD and provide an engaging afterschool program at all eight Mountain View school sites.

“Think Together’s mission is to partner with schools to change the odds for kids,” said Paul.  “As we continue to rise together from an unprecedented year of deeply committed collaboration driven by service and safety; we are seeing students come back to our afterschool programs eager to learn, reconnect with friends and teachers - and ready to forge their future ahead. At Think Together, we are so happy to be with our students in person again, connecting, mentoring, and educating them.”

Serving as MVSD’s Lights On Afterschool Showcase site this year was Baker School, where students showcased healthy living and hydration.  To help motivate and encourage the daily use of water bottles, as well as supporting the environment by decreasing the number of plastic cups being used, students took part in a hydration lesson and decorated their very own water bottles.

MVSD’s other schools held special Lights On Afterschool activities and throughout the District students were excited to show off their hard work, creativity, and innovations from Think Together’s expanded learning programs that emphasize agency, academic achievement and adventure.  Think Together also continues to engage students with homework support, youth leadership, sports/fitness drills, and community engagement.

“We greatly appreciate the dedication and hard work of the Think Together staff at all of our schools who provide a safe and beneficial program for our students each day,” said George Schonborn, Director of Pupil Personnel Services.  “Along with the extended learning and homework help, our Think Together staff provide social-emotional support and activities for our students which is very important, especially with the many challenges of the pandemic. In addition to the afterschool program, our partnership with Think Together includes a comprehensive Summer Program providing extended learning and enrichment for our students.”
