Parkview Teacher Awarded Bobby Salcedo Award

Parkview Teacher Awarded Bobby Salcedo Award

The Mountain View School District was proud to honor Rocio Centeno, a kindergarten teacher from Parkview School as this year’s recipient of the Bobby Salcedo Esperanza Award.  The award was presented at the 16th Annual Tamalada sponsored by the El Monte Promise Foundation in partnership with the City of El Monte, City of South El Monte, El Monte/South El Monte Chamber of Commerce, Mountain View School District, El Monte City School District, El Monte Union High School District, Rio Hondo College, and El Monte Coalition of Latino Professionals (emCLP).  The award commemorates the life and legacy of Roberto “Bobby” Salcedo, a respected teacher and administrator and acknowledges outstanding educators for their hard work and dedication to the students they serve, as well as their commitment and contribution to the advancement of their schools, students or educational community.

Rocio has been a valued member of the Mountain View School District for 23 ½ years, dedicating all those years to teaching and inspiring students at Parkview Elementary School.

“We are extremely honored to recognize Rocio Centeno as Mountain View’s 2019 Bobby Salcedo Esperanza Award winner,” said Lillian Maldonado French, MVSD Superintendent.  “During her many years of dedicated service, Rocio has taught scores of kindergarten students to read in both English and Spanish, and her classroom is a rich, exciting place full of adventure and engagement for students.”

Rocio is tremendously dedicated to her students and is always the first to volunteer to learn and implement new ideas and programs.  In addition to her incredible teaching at Parkview, Rocio is a dedicated volunteer in the community, supporting students and youth in a variety of ways.  She is very involved with the Boy Scouts, serving as a Scout Master and volunteer for many years.  She is certified with a Wood Badge, which is the equivalent of an Eagle Scout for adults.   Rocio also dedicates her time to the Partnership Scholars Program (PSP), mentoring 7th through 12th graders on their road to college.  This includes guiding them through the A-G requirements, the college application process and providing monthly experiences like trips to museums, concerts, and college visits. To date, she has mentored 10 students and celebrated their college entrance and graduation from UC Santa Cruz, UCLA, USC and many more universities.

“Rocio is an inspiration to us all as she continues to make an extraordinary difference in the lives of our students and community while dealing with a life-threatening illness.  She never gives up, always has a smile on her face, and is always the first to ask what needs to be done. She is truly deserving of the Bobby Salcedo Esperanza Award and we are grateful for all that she does for our schools and district,” said Maldonado French.
