Family Biliteracy

The Family Biliteracy program provides a space for children and their parents to engage in dialogic reading activities. In dialogic reading, the adult helps the child become the teller of the story. Children learn most from books when they are actively involved. Teachers model, differentiate and tailor biliteracy skills—reading, writing, speaking, listening, and comprehending—across languages. The main goal is to increase parents’ academic involvement through literacy techniques that are supported by educators. In this manner, parents and educators work together to increase students’ academic achievement by using parents’ primary language as the avenue to develop children’s fluency and academic vocabulary in both languages.
