Students Enjoy Read Across America Week

The joy and importance of reading was the focus throughout the Mountain View School District (MVSD) as schools celebrated Read Across America, the largest national reading event in the United States sponsored by the National Education Association (NEA).

Schools hosted fun dress-up days and throughout the week school campuses were filled with students dressed as their favorite storybook character and wearing crazy socks and wild and wacky clothes because they are wild about reading!  Pajama day was a big hit with students wearing their PJ’s to school and snuggling up with a good book.

Kindergarten students received a special treat with Longo Toyota/Lexus team members visiting all of MVSD’s Kindergarten classrooms to read a book and share the importance of literacy.  Dressed as popular Dr. Seuss characters, the Longo Toyota/Lexus employees read a variety of Dr. Seuss books and gave each student a pencil and an eraser.  Additionally, they presented each teacher with a collection of books for the classroom.

The highlight of the annual week-long reading celebration is the guest read-in where community members join in the fun by visiting schools and reading their favorite book to students.  Schools were excited to welcome guest readers including El Monte Police Chief, Jake Fisher and other El Monte Police Officers, city officials, local business people, veterans of the armed forces, high school students, MVSD board members, school district staff and retirees, parents and volunteers who all shared how reading has helped them in their lives and they encouraged the students to continue to read.

“We appreciate all the volunteer readers who took the time to visit our schools and read to our students,” said Dr. Raymond Andry, Superintendent, who enjoyed reading in several classrooms.  “Inviting guest readers into our classrooms is a great way to show students the importance of reading and that they have an entire community supporting them.  Our teachers and classified staff members do a fantastic job with our Read Across America events, creating wonderful memories for our students while instilling a love of reading.”

As the foundation of every child’s education, literacy opens doorways to opportunity and MVSD is committed to participating in Read Across America each year, partnering educators, parents, librarians, mentors and community members to read with students and give them a lifelong gift of learning.  In the words of Dr. Seuss, remember that…reading takes you places, the more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go. And, you’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child.”
