Mountain View School District Teacher and Parent Volunteer Honored by the L.A. County Bilingual Directors’ Association
Mountain View School District (MVSD)
teacher, Marita d’Arnaud and parent volunteer, Selene Miranda were among the
honorees at the Los Angeles County Bilingual
Directors’ Association’s 40th Annual Recognition Ceremony held at the Almansor
Court in Alhambra. The annual event honors outstanding administrators,
educators, support staff and parents from Los Angeles County schools who
exemplify the best in promoting the ideals of bilingual education.
Marita d’Arnaud is an
outstanding sixth grade teacher at Twin Lakes Elementary School. Her exceptional teaching earned her the honor
of being chosen by her peers to be MVSD’s 2015-16 Teacher of the Year. d’Arnaud has been an essential member of the
District for 27 years. In addition to
being a dynamic, highly effective teacher, she has also served as a lead
teacher on the English Language Development (ELD) and English Language Acquisition
(ELA) Committees, been a mentor teacher and trainer for Project GLAD and Write
from the Beginning. d’Arnaud strives to
instill a passion and drive in her students and encourages them to dream big. As she leads her class she aims to foster each
student’s critical thinking skills, to nurture the whole child, and to provide
a safe, fun environment where students are willing to take risks and use
various learning styles. Her goal is to create
lifelong learners who become productive, respectful citizens who value cultural
diversity.
Selene Miranda is one of MVSD’s outstanding parent volunteers from
Parkview Elementary School. She volunteers regularly at the school site,
participates in and assists in leading parent workshops, and serves as the
president of the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC). In her role as DELAC president she seeks to
understand how to support English learners so that she can advocate and provide
support. Miranda also serves as president of the
Migrant Education Consortium. She
completely understands the importance of ensuring that MVSD’s English learners
are learning and striving academically.
“We are so proud to recognize our distinguished honorees,” said Margarita
Gonzalez-Amador, MVSD’s Director of Curriculum, Instruction and English Learner
Programs. “Both Marita and Selena are
extremely dedicated to our bilingual students and ensuring that they receive
the support and instruction they need to be successful. Their commitment to improve instruction,
services and advance the rights of English learners in our district is
commendable. They are very deserving of
this recognition and we are grateful to the Bilingual Directors’ Association
for the opportunity to acknowledge their efforts,” added Gonzalez-Amador.
