Career Day Event Inspires Kranz Students

Kranz Intermediate School held its 3rd annual Career Day, welcoming professionals in a variety of fields who shared their expertise with the school’s seventh grade students. According to Bernadette Dincin, Career Day coordinator and Kranz teacher, the goal of the annual event is to encourage students to begin thinking about their future careers, what it takes to attain them, and the many career options that are available.

Each student attended three sessions, choosing from occupations such as a chemist, fire fighter, police officer, probation officer, military personnel, teacher, financial planner, culinary caterer, architecture, heating and air conditioning, technology and electronics, nursing, photography, advertising, professional boxing, communications, traffic school instructor/owner, educational advisor, college professor/director, after school program coordinator, musician and alkaline water distributor.

“We have a great variety of professions represented and we are grateful to our guests for taking time from their busy schedules to share their experiences and expertise with our students,” said Sean Grycel, Kranz principal.  “One of the speakers is a former student of mine who is now a fire fighter and one of my professors from Claremont Graduate University is also here.  Career Day is a great way to expose our students to some professions they might not be aware of.”

A few of the guests were Kranz alumni including Joseph Diaz, a professional boxer and Gustavo Quintana Jr. a chemist.  They were happy to come back and share their educational and career journeys with the students. Retired Kranz teacher, Armand Almarez also came back to share his experience as a teacher, musician and alkaline water distributer.

“Becoming an Olympic and professional boxer took a lot of hard work,” said Diaz.  “And, all that hard work paid off because I get to make my living by doing something I love.  You guys work hard and go after your dreams and remember anything is possible through hard work and dedication.”

Sharing some financial education was Evan Mooney, a financial planner and debt specialist.  Mooney talked about the need for young people to become financially literate and talked about compound interest, inflation and graduating college debt free.

“Financial education is so important because you are responsible for your own wealth,” said Mooney.  “What creates the most stress for people is lack of finances.  Remember, if you have the desire and willpower to do what you want you will have everything you need,” he said.

While the 7th graders eagerly learned about an assortment of careers, the 8th graders spent the day touring colleges including USC, UCLA, Cal State L.A., Cal State Long Beach, Azusa Pacific and Mt. SAC.  Kranz staff strives to provide students with meaningful educational experiences that foster learning and motivate them to continue in school and pursue their goals.  The entire Kranz family appreciates all the career day guests who gave of their time to share their career journey and inspire the students.
