College Outings Help Students Set Their Sights on College

In line with MVSD's college going culture, several students have recently participated in college tours and field trips.

In November, students in Kranz Intermediate School’s AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) class traveled on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train to the University of San Diego for a tour of the campus and a glimpse of college life.  Students enjoyed a walking tour led by UC San Diego students and going into lecture halls and classrooms.  They learned about the university’s admission requirements and application review process, as well as financial aid and scholarship opportunities.  The experience enabled them to get a feel of what it's like to be a student at UCSD.   Before heading back to Kranz on the train, the students and their chaperones also enjoyed a few of the sites in San Diego.

Students from Monte Vista's AVID program and 5th graders from Voorhis School had a chance to cheer on the UCLA Bruins at their November 12 football game against Oregon State at the Rose Bowl.  The game tickets were part of UCLA’s “I’m Going to College” program which provides children with the opportunity to experience a preview of college life, and motivates young people to achieve in school and in life.   The students had a great time at the game which included a pregame ceremony honoring Veterans.   To the students’ delight, the Bruins were victorious as they beat Oregon State 38-24.
