The Magnolia Learning Center (MLC) launched its PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) program with a high spirited assembly. PBIS is a proactive approach to establishing the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students to achieve social, emotional and academic success and is used in all MVSD schools. Students, families, staff and community members gathered to celebrate the implementation of the new program and the unveiling of MLC's mascot - the Phoenix. Students voted on the mascot and colors for the school and the Phoenix, as well as burgundy, gold and black were selected. MLC’s Phoenix was designed by 6th grader Damian Pyle and represents rising from the ashes, spreading wings and soaring.
Leading off the assembly by presenting our nation’s flag were members of the Greater El Monte VFW Post 10218, and El Monte Police Sergeant, Roger Cobian who sang the National Anthem.
MLC students and staff honored members of the El Monte Rotary and El Monte Kiwanis with the Superhero Award for their constant support of MLC's students and programs.
“We greatly appreciate the support of the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs and their kindness and outreach to our students has truly made a difference,” said Terri Thomas, MLC Administrator. “The members in each club volunteer their time and by serving the community and their efforts have made a positive impact throughout El Monte. Each of you are excellent role models of service to our students.”
According to Arcy Martinez, MLC’s PBIS Coach, schoolwide expectations were established for students focusing on appropriate behavior.
“PBIS focuses on praising and rewarding students for displaying appropriate behavior in the classroom, on the playground and anywhere on campus,” said Martinez. “Our goal by emphasizing the positive is to decrease discipline issues and increase academic achievement for our students.”
Wanda Robertson, grandmother of Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs basketball team shared some inspirational words with the students and encouraged them to believe in themselves and work hard to achieve their goals.
“I see a lot of students here with great potential,” said Robertson. “You need to respect yourself and others and surround yourself with people who have similar goals. Kawhi is a natural athlete with great ability, but he has always worked extremely hard and he continues to push himself to be the best. His talent, drive and family support all led to his success. You can be successful too! Work hard, stay in school and don’t ever give up. Believe in yourself because your teachers, the community and I believe in you!”
Joining in on the celebration were members of The Laker Girls, who helped students recite their PBIS Chant and raffled off some prizes, took pictures and signed posters. MLC students strive to be safe, respectful, and responsible every day and through the PBIS program, many positive changes are happening at the school.
“PBIS is definitely making a difference in the students’ behavior,” said Monica Romero, MLC teacher. “They are more motivated to show good behavior so they can receive raffle tickets and it’s been great seeing them demonstrate positive behaviors throughout our campus.”
Thomas concluded the assembly by thanking the MLC staff, the school district administration, families and community members for supporting MLC’s students and encouraged the students to continue working hard to set goals and achieve their best academically, emotionally and socially.
“Students you have your future ahead of you and we are all here to support you and we believe in you and your abilities,” said the proud administrator.
