School ProfileTwin Lakes is a K-5 elementary school located in El Monte, in the San Gabriel Valley. Twin Lakes is located twenty minutes east of downtown Los Angeles at the juncture of the 10 and 605 freeways. El Monte is a densely populated area and many of our students live in apartment buildings in single-parent households. Even in dual parent families, it is common for both parents to work to support the families' needs, sometimes holding down two jobs per parent. Others are unable to obtain employment. Based on information obtained for STAR data, 43% of our parents did not graduate from high school. Twin Lakes has a multi-ethnic population comprised of 660 students that are 82% Hispanic, 14% Asian, 1% White, and 3% Other (2005 CBEDS). Of these students, 63% are considered Limited English Proficient and 90% are identified as Title 1 or educationally disadvantaged. Many of our students enter kindergarten with limited or no English proficiency.
All K-3 classrooms participate in Class Size Reduction. Fourth and fifth grade classes have an average of 32 students. Special education students are serviced by one full-time RSP teacher, one part-time speech/language specialist. GATE students are clustered in three classrooms at both fourth and fifth grade. All teachers have SDAIE certification to meet the needs of our LEP students.
